In Puerto Rico, these standards, which are considered to be correct, are something that we live with, consciously and subconsciously. We find them to be accurate when really, they're just social constructs. Our goal was and is to show women that they are beautiful just the way they are, to let them know that they are the ones who decide if they want to follow the standards or not, and to empower them. We wanted to show women that it's their choice. It is also an effort to create awareness of mental health issues caused by negative self and body image. When we published that article, we promised that we would conduct the same study in regards to male beauty standards in Puerto Rico.
